SMARC Postdoctoral Research AssociateJob Description

The Postdoctoral Research Associate will develop advanced neutron and X-ray scattering methods for analyzing biomass-derived polymers, waste plastics, and protein-based material. The position involves investigating polymer conformations in mixed solvent systems and within porous media, focusing on upcycling waste plastics and biomass/lignin valorization.

Primary responsibilities will include designing and implementing research protocols and safety procedures; adapt new procedures, methods, or instrumentation relative to research procedures.

Research Technician Position, Fuzhong Zhang LabJob Description

The Research/Lab Technician will be working with Dr. Fuzhong Zhang at Washington University as part of the Synthetic biology Manufacturing of Advanced materials Research Center (SMARC). In this role, the technician will support a team of synthetic biologists, material science, technologists, students and more.

SMARC’s mission is to push the frontiers of knowledge through convergent research; develop pathways to train a manufacturing workforce; leverage an environment of diversity; and enhance innovation in the manufacturing of synthetic biological materials.

We are currently looking to fill a Lab Tech position, specifically for someone with expertise in upstream and downstream biomanufacturing. This position involves working on the bioprocessing of protein-based materials at the 10L scale fermentation level, as well as silk fiber spinning. Our goal is to produce sufficient hybrid silk protein to demonstrate fabric applications.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Assist lab personnel with projects and experiments that they need help with, including setting up experiments, running experiments, collecting data, and analyzing the results.
  • Help maintain lab equipment and manage lab activities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
