To prepare our trainees for the inter-disciplinary nature of this work, all students involved in our center will participate in a series of mini- “boot camps” to gain conceptual knowledge of synthetic biology, data science, computational materials science, materials characterization tools, economics, and mass communication. Each boot camp will last two days in the summer and will be focused on those topics. At the boot camp, we will include themed courses, professional development activities, and social events. We also currently have monthly research project meetings to help transfer knowledge across labs and disciplines and to facilitate convergence.
In June 2023, we held a two day boot camp for graduate students that consisted of team-building activities, equity and diversity professional development workshops, poster sessions. At the boot camp, graduate students from all areas of the project met each other in-person for the first time. They learned from each other’s research as well as getting to know one another. As a result, we benefited society by developing a future workforce that can work with each other across the fields of synthetic biology, data science, computational materials science, materials characterization tools, economics, and mass communication.
